FAMOUS GUJJARS
1. Chaudhary Rahmat Ali (Urdu: چودھری رحمت علی) a Gujjar of Gorsi goth who coined the name of Pakistan.(November 16, 1897 – February 3, 1951) was a Pakistani [1][2][3] Muslim nationalist who was one of the earliest proponents of the creation of the state of Pakistan. He is credited with creating the name “Pakistan” for a separate Muslim homeland in South Asia. He propagated the Scheme of Pakistan with a missionary zeal since its inception in 1933. He also founded Pakistan National Movement to propagate his ideas. Being as a political thinker and an idealist, he condemned Muhammad Ali Jinnah for accepting a smaller Pakistan in 1947. He wanted to save every Indian Muslim from Hindu domination. In 1933, he wrote his ideas in the famous pamphlet entitled “Now or Never; Are We to Live or Perish Forever” also known as Pakistan Declaration. The pamphlet started with this famous sentence:
At this solemn hour in the history of India, when British and Indian statesmen are laying the foundations of a Federal Constitution for that land, we address this appeal to you, in the name of our common heritage, on behalf of our thirty million Muslim brethren who live in PAKSTAN – by which we mean the five Northern units of India, Viz: Punjab, North-West Frontier Province (Afghan Province), Kashmir, Sind and Baluchistan.
2. Mīān Muhammad Bakhsh Kharhi Sharif(Punjabi: میاں محمد بخش ) was a Sufi saint and a Punjabi/Pahari poet of great repute. He is especially renowned as the writer of a book of poetry called Saiful Malūk. He was born in a village called khanqa peir-E-shah Gazi Khari Sharif, situated near Mirpur District of Azad Jammu & Kashmir).
He belonged to the Gujjar baradari and the Dedhar clan, he was a fourth generation descendant of Pīr-e Shāh Ghāzī Qalandar Damriyan Wali Sarkar, who was buried in Khari Sharif. Pīr-e Shāh Ghāzī’s khalīfah was Khwājah Dīn Muhammad; and his khalīfah was Mīān Shamsuddīn, who had three sons: Mīān Bahāval Bakhsh, Mīān Muhammad Bakhsh – the subject of this article -, and Mīān ‘Alī Bakhsh. Mīān Muhammad Bakhsh’s ancestors originated in Gujrat, but had later settled in the Mirpur District of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He was the poet of Pahari language.
3. Chaudhry Fazal Ilahi (Punjabi, Urdu: فضل الہی چودہری; (January 1, 1904 – June 2, 1982) was the fifth President of Pakistan from August 14, 1973, until his resignation on September 16, 1978.
4. Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry was born in a family in Marala village, near the city of Kharian, Gujrat District in Punjab province on January 1, 1904. He received his early education from his hometown and went to Aligarh University and later Punjab University from where he got a law degree, and went into practising law. He did his M. A. in Political Science in 1925 and took his degree of Law from the University of Punjab in 1927. After completing his education, he went back to Gujrat and started practising Law. He took part in the election of Gujrat District Board and was elected unopposed.
5. Major. Tufail Mohammad (1914 – 7 August 1958, born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab) was commissioned in the 16th Punjab Regiment in 1943. On 7 August 1958, Mohammad, a Company Commander in the East Pakistan Rifles, encircled an Indian post, which allegedly violated the internationally recognized boundary between the two countries, in the Lakshmipur area. Though mortally wounded in the hand-to-hand encounter that followed, Mohammed continued to lead his troops until the Indians were driven out, leaving four dead and three prisoners. He died the same day.
Major Tufail Mohammad was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award and is the only person to win the award for an action outside the Indo-Pakistan Wars.
